Welcome to Winky’s Farm! My mom and I started this blog in 2012 when I got my first chickens and became the gateway for my love for urban agriculture. Now at 17, I’ve started to expand the original project to various others and hope that this can be a way to educate and inspire others to start their own urban farms, even if it just means growing a single corn stalk!

Our “guard dog”, Barley and his chickens- Parsley, Juniper, Periwinkle, Comfrey, Clove and Mallow!

With food security, climate change and loss of farmland a growing issue, it is important to hold the capability to grow our own food in a sustainable way. Not only does this cut the emissions from food processing and shipping, it is also a way to improve the Land we live on. In the US, 5% of Carbon emissions come from lawn maintenance and lawn grass is essentially a mass monoculture of a plant we do not eat and has very little environmental benefits. (Grass has very shallow roots so it often leads to soil erosion into nearby water ways.)

Throughout this website, you can find out why chickens are amazing animals and how to properly take care of them. Legalizing backyard chickens is the next step to creating a fresh, local food sources for everyone and urban agriculture.

Urban agriculture is a way to gain a connection with our food and our Land all while enjoying the health benefits from eating pesticide free food and cutting down our Carbon Footprint. So what are you waiting for? Go grow something!
